I had the opportunity to spend 4 days in Katmai National Park August 2017 and WOW!, what a treat to watch the brown bears up close and personal! Spending many days with them allowed me to get familiar with the different family groups present, see all sorts of interesting bear behavior and interactions, and meet new friends, visitors and locals alike. A trip I won't soon forget!
Each summer, anywhere from 45-70 brown bears gather in the Brooks River area coinciding with the spawning Sockeye Salmon that come by the thousands from Bristol Bay, swimming up the Naknek River through Naknek Lake and finally up the Brooks River. Here they will spawn and then eventually die. Bears will benefit from the beginning of the spawn and also later as the dead fish float back down the river. A chance to watch the cycle of life at its finest!
